The P2 Program matches a company's needs with an intern's experience and interest. Interns will be available to begin in early June. By the end of the internship companies receive a written report comparing viable alternatives, including recommendations, cost analyses, estimated savings and reduced environmental impact.
Companies must agree to provide intern wages of $15 per hour minimum. Interns are expected to work full time (40 hours/week) for the duration of the program. Companies must provide interns with a work area, computer, telephone and any necessary safety training.
P2 interns have successfully completed an intensive semester long course in energy efficiency measures, best management practices and applied engineering. In addition, students applying for internships must demonstrate strong academic performance, and provide references and writing samples. Preference is given to students who have had industrial experience. Only upper-level engineering students are accepted into the program.
The P2 faculty and staff offer guidance and assistance for the duration of the project. Equipment is available for monitoring the efficiency of boilers, compressors, motors, lighting, heating and cooling equipment.
What types of projects are implemented?
Here are some examples of past intern projects:
In 2008 a pollution prevention intern recommended a retrofit for the refrigeration system at a large Missouri meat processing plant that would result in a potential cost savings of over $117,000.
Four pollution prevention interns identified more than $180,000 in savings at one of the nation's largest telecommunications companies in 2009. Improvements were identified in lighting, humidification systems for data centers, water treatment solutions for cooling towers, equipment modifications, boiler and pipe insulation and much more.
In 2010 a pollution prevention intern identified over $140,000 in savings for one of Kansas City's largest hospitals. Improvements were found in lighting, boiler efficiencies, and water conservation.
